Stained Glass
Recently, I decided I wanted to have a go at stained glass. How hard could it be after all? Well, a bit harder than I originally thought to be honest! But I’ve now cracked it (with a bit of help) and I’m loving it.
The process typically starts with a design or template, then the glass is carefully cut, fitted, and finally soldered together to bring your vision to life. It reminds me of doing a jigsaw puzzle, but with beautiful bits of coloured glass. I invested in a soldering iron, lots of glass and all the necessary tools and set to. After I’d wasted quite a lot of glass and wasn’t getting anywhere fast, I knew I needed help. So I got in touch with Yiscah Rosemary, a local artist who has been practising the heritage craft of Stained Glass for the past 7 years. I asked her if she would give me a 1:1 lesson and I’m so glad I did that. Yiscah taught me the correct way to cut, grind, burnish and solder the glass pieces together to create beautiful glass ornaments. There’s no stopping me now – I’m having the best time creating flowers, dragonflies and other more advanced beautiful geometric shapes.
